What Is Career Alignment?

Career alignment describes how well a person's capabilities, preferences, values, interests, and ways of contributing fit the reality of their work. It is broader than asking whether someone likes their job.

A person may enjoy some aspects of work while still experiencing poor alignment because

Their strongest capabilities are rarely used; the work conflicts with important values; the daily responsibilities do not match what they expected; the environment makes effective contribution difficult; the role requires capabilities they have little willingness to develop.

Alignment can change

A person may become more aligned through: developing new skills; changing responsibilities; finding a different team; negotiating a different work arrangement; moving into another role; or eventually changing career direction.

Alignment is not a fixed condition

It can be assessed and improved.

Career clarity starts with understanding the relationship between who you are and the work you are doing.
