What Makes Someone a Natural Leader? Signs and Characteristics

“Natural leader” is useful everyday language, but it should not be interpreted as meaning: “born leader who does not need development.”

Someone may appear naturally comfortable with: taking initiative; organizing people; making decisions; explaining direction; resolving problems; encouraging others; accepting responsibility; seeing possibilities; coordinating action.

These patterns can indicate a leadership tendency. But leadership effectiveness still requires development.

A person can have a strong tendency toward leadership and still need to develop: emotional awareness; communication; judgment; technical knowledge; conflict management; strategic thinking; ethical decision-making.

Natural inclination can create a starting advantage. It is not a finished leadership capability.

Leadership can be developed.
