What Is Solution Mapping?

Solution mapping is the ability to connect a problem to possible interventions and expected outcomes.

The mapping structure

Instead of jumping from "Problem → favorite solution," a solution map shows: Problem → causes → possible interventions → required resources → expected outcome → risks.

Career decision example

If students struggle to complete career decisions, possible interventions might include information, counseling, self-assessment, mentoring, exposure, or practical experience. Mapping helps prevent a single solution from being treated as the only possibility.

An essential question

"What evidence would tell us whether this intervention worked?"

A skill can be developed. But understanding how a capability connects with your natural gifts, values, and possible career direction can make development more intentional.
