Phase 1Years 1–3
Degree / AAT Foundation
- Complete an Accounting, Finance, or Business degree — or start with AAT at Level 3
- Study financial accounting, management accounting, taxation, and auditing
- Learn Excel to an advanced level (VLOOKUP, pivot tables, financial modelling)
- Secure a placement year with an accounting firm if your degree offers one
- Join ICAEW, ACCA, or CIMA student membership and begin your studies

Professional Qualification
- Enrol in ACA (ICAEW), ACCA, or CIMA — the three main UK professional bodies
- Work in an accounting role simultaneously (training contract or graduate scheme)
- Pass professional exams across all modules (up to 15 papers for ACCA)
- Complete the required years of practical experience (3 years for ACA/ACCA)
- Develop specialist knowledge: audit, tax, financial reporting, or management accounting
