Phase 1Years 1–4
Engineering Degree (BEng / MEng)
- Complete A-levels in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, and Physics
- Study a 3-year BEng or 4-year MEng in Civil Engineering (ICE-accredited)
- Learn structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, geotechnics, materials, and surveying
- Use AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis software (STAAD.Pro, SAP2000)
- Secure summer placements with contractors, consultancies, or local authorities

Phase 2Years 4–6
Graduate Engineer
- Join a graduate scheme at a major engineering firm (Arup, Atkins, Mott MacDonald, etc.)
- Register as an Engineering Graduate (EngGrad) with ICE
- Work on real projects across design, site supervision, or project management
- Begin logging your ICE Professional Review experience (IPRE)
- Build your Initial Professional Development (IPD) portfolio

Phase 3Years 5–8
Chartered Status (CEng)
- Complete the required years of relevant engineering experience
- Submit your ICE Professional Review report
- Pass the Technical Interview and Competence Assessment
- Achieve Chartered Engineer (CEng) status — a significant career milestone
- Consider membership of specialist bodies: CIWEM (water), IStructE (structural), CIHT (highways)
