Phase 1Years 1–3
Foundation
- Complete a degree in Business, Computer Science, Engineering, or any analytical field
- Learn product fundamentals: user stories, roadmaps, prioritisation frameworks (RICE, MoSCoW)
- Study Agile/Scrum methodology — the standard framework in most tech teams
- Develop basic data literacy: understand metrics, funnels, cohorts, A/B testing
- Complete the Product School or Reforge PM course (both are well-regarded)

Phase 2Years 2–4
Entry into Product
- Break in via an adjacent role: Business Analyst, QA, Customer Success, or UX Designer
- Or apply for Associate PM (APM) programmes at large tech companies (Google, Meta, Microsoft)
- Build proficiency in product analytics tools: Mixpanel, Amplitude, or Segment
- Write your first PRDs (Product Requirements Documents) and present to stakeholders
- Learn to run sprint planning, retrospectives, and product reviews

Phase 3Years 3–5
PM Role
- Secure a Product Manager role — own a product area end-to-end
- Develop your product sense: deep user empathy, market understanding, competitive awareness
- Master stakeholder management: engineering, design, sales, legal, leadership
- Build a track record of shipping features that move key metrics
- Specialise: Consumer PM, Platform PM, Growth PM, or Enterprise PM

Phase 4Year 5+
Senior Track
- Move to Senior PM or Principal PM — own a larger product surface area
- Lead a team of PMs as Group PM or Head of Product
- Drive product strategy: annual planning, OKRs, and roadmap alignment with C-Suite
- Build external presence: speak at conferences, write on LinkedIn, mentor junior PMs
- Target CPO (Chief Product Officer) track at scale-up or enterprise companies
