How to Become a Psychologist
Psychologists study human behaviour and mental processes. They work in clinical, educational, organisational, and research settings. Clinical psychology — the most common route — requires 9–10 years of training and is highly competitive.

Phase 1Years 1–3
Psychology Degree
- Complete a BPS-accredited BSc Psychology degree (required for the direct pathway)
- Achieve at least a 2:1 — clinical doctorate programmes are highly competitive
- Understand core areas: cognitive, biological, social, developmental, and abnormal psychology
- Participate in university research projects and gain research methods experience
- Join the British Psychological Society (BPS) as a student member

Phase 2Years 3–5
Relevant Experience
- Gain at least 12–24 months of paid experience in mental health settings (NHS, charities)
- Work as an Assistant Psychologist, Research Assistant, or Mental Health Support Worker
- Develop therapeutic skills: active listening, CBT frameworks, risk assessment
- Build a strong reference network from supervisors and clinical managers
- Consider a relevant MSc (e.g., Mental Health, Clinical Psychology) to strengthen your application

Phase 3Years 5–8
Doctoral Training (DClinPsy)
- Apply to the LCFT clearing house for a DClinPsy (Clinical Psychology Doctorate)
- Complete the 3-year full-time doctoral programme (highly competitive — circa 600 places nationally)
- Complete placements across child, adult, older adult, and specialist services
- Conduct and submit an original research thesis
- Pass clinical competency assessments and viva voce examination

Phase 4Years 8–10+
Registration & Practice
- Register with the HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) as a Clinical Psychologist
- Apply for qualified clinical psychologist posts (Band 7 NHS)
- Choose a specialism: trauma, neuropsychology, forensic, child & family, or OD
- Pursue CPD and pursue Chartered Psychologist status with the BPS
- Consider consultancy, private practice, or academic research posts
