Your Step-by-Step Roadmap

Phase 1Years 1–3

Social Work Degree

  • Complete a BA or BSc in Social Work (BASW/Social Work England approved programme)
  • Undertake 170 days minimum of supervised practice placements
  • Study law relevant to social work: Children Act, Mental Health Act, Care Act
  • Learn assessment frameworks: risk assessment, safeguarding, strength-based practice
  • Develop relationship-based practice skills: active listening, empathy, professional boundaries

Phase 2Year 3–4

Registration

  • Apply to register with Social Work England as a qualified social worker
  • Complete your final assessed practice placement and sign-off
  • Apply for Newly Qualified Social Worker (NQSW) roles in children's or adults' services
  • Complete the ASYE (Assessed and Supported Year in Employment) programme
  • Receive structured supervision, caseload management support, and CPD

Phase 3Years 4–6

Consolidation

  • Build confidence managing a caseload: child protection, looked-after children, or adult care
  • Develop specialist skills in your area: children and families, mental health, learning disability, or older adults
  • Complete post-qualifying awards: AMHP (Approved Mental Health Professional) or BIA
  • Engage in regular clinical supervision and reflective practice
  • Build resilience and robust self-care strategies

Phase 4Year 6+

Advancement

  • Apply for Senior Practitioner or Practice Educator roles
  • Pursue Team Manager or Service Manager track
  • Qualify as a Practice Educator to train and assess student social workers
  • Complete the AMHP qualification to expand your clinical authority
  • Target strategic leadership roles: Service Manager, Head of Service, Director of Children's Services
